It was a pleasure seeing and meeting so many interesting students, parents and admission counselors at the Southern Connecticut Spring College Fair earlier this month. We were pleased to be able to talk to students about their college plans and answer questions about the college application process. We were especially pleased to see so many sophomores from the various area high schools already thinking about college.
People often ask us when is the best time to start planning for college. We at College Docs believe that sophomore year can be the optimal time to begin to get focused on the college application process. You still have plenty of time to research the different types of college experiences that might be the best fit for your long–term goals. It is helpful to be aware of the specialized requirements of certain schools, such as language, science or AP requirements or portfolios for special programs. Some of the advantages of starting the process in sophomore year include:

- Allowing you to take advantage of summer enrichment programs
- Planning your academic curriculum for junior and senior years
- Trying out different extracurricular activities
- Planning for SATs and other standardized tests
For parents, starting early allows time to incorporate college visits during the summer or school vacations. This can prevent the stress that often accompanies junior and early senior years. One of the complaints we often hear from parents is that they ran out of time to do everything they needed to do. We have found that until kids begin to actually visit schools the idea of “college” remains an abstract, nebulous prospect. Once they visit various college campuses the idea of college becomes more tangible. It makes their college goals more realistic and more motivating, as they now have an image of what they are working toward. Many juniors and seniors have told us they wish they had started the process sooner because course work, social life, and outside activities competed for their time as upperclassmen.
