Transfer Students
Are you a student currently enrolled in a college or have previously taken college courses and you are now thinking of transferring to a different school? Maybe the college is not what you were expecting. Maybe the academics are too difficult or not challenging enough, or you have decided on a major that your school does not offer. Possibly the social life is not satisfying. Or you feel that the student you were coming out of high school is not where you are today and you are looking for a more rigorous program or a more intimate setting or a greater opportunity for research.
Whatever your reasons, many students choose to transfer from one college to another. About one third of college students transfer to a different school during the course of their college career. Sometimes students start out at a two year school and then are ready to tackle a four year degree. Often students realise that they did not do enough research ahead of time to find colleges that were good fits for them. They may have just gone where their family had gone or friends were going or gone to a school close to home.
Important lessons can be learned from any experience, even one you may consider a ‘failure’. With help to process your own situation, valuable information about what kind of a learner you are, what environment works or doesn’t work for you and a clearer sense of your career goals can be explored and utilized to make a better informed decision for the future. There are also important variables to consider in the transfer process. Some colleges are more transfer-friendly than others. One must consider transfer application requirements, transfer acceptance rates, course equivalences for transfer of credit, the general education requirement differences among schools and varying financial aid opportunities.

Don’t despair if your first attempt at college did not work out the way you’d hoped. Sometimes students have discovered what they were looking for and went from a struggling or average student to a high achieving student in a different setting. Others have transferred, after a year or two, into a school that they were rejected from as a senior in high school. Others have gained confidence and left a school close to home to explore exciting possibilities elsewhere.
